If your pet expects food and treats at any and every time of the day and follows you into the kitchen or to the dining area, you need to train them better at respecting boundaries. Set up a baby gate barrier at the kitchen doorway. Tell your dog to ‘Stay’. Walk away, but return and give your dog a treat when they don’t move. Gradually, replace the baby gate with a shorter barrier, like a board and repeat the exercise. Build up a longer ‘stay’ duration. Progress to using shorter and shorter barriers. If your dog jumps the barrier, send them back and try again. The pet has to know that they only get a treat when they don’t cross into the kitchen or the dining area.
