Check which of these reasons is the cause of your canine pet’s weight gain:
Age: Older dogs have slower metabolism. Just like humans, most dogs will begin to put on the pounds easily in their golden years.
Lack of activity: Does your dog join you when you watch television for hours? Is he/she as much a coach potato as you are? Dogs who don’t run around or play won’t burn enough calories.
Recovering from illness: If you dog is recovering from an illness or a surgery, they may not move about much. This could lead to weight gain if their treats and table scraps continue as well.
Dogs on medication: Some medicines can reduce the metabolic rate or increase appetite. This can cause them to store the excess calories as fat. Corticosteroids, used for bronchitis or other respiratory diseases, for example, makes them start eating more.
