Moderate red wine consumption (one drink per day for women, one to two drinks per day for men) has consistently been linked to lower levels of inflammation, and a lower risk of heart disease. Red wine has a thinning effect on blood that makes platelets less sticky and less likely to clot. It also contains more than 200 health-enhancing antioxidant compounds called polyphenols. One of the most potent polyphenols in red wine is called resveratrol. Resveratrol has been shown to have a broad range of health-enhancing properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial capabilities. If you’re pregnant, or have had alcohol issues, do not include wine as a part of your anti-inflammatory diet.
