Healthy, Not Thin!

Often, the factors that contribute to a child’s obesity is a lack of availability of healthy foods, and walkable neighbourhoods that encourage physical activity. Parents can talk to their children about obesity without introducing blame or shame. Conversations have to be age-appropriate. Even so-called good-natured teasing is a bad idea. Avoid talk about being on a diet and, instead, discuss health. Adults, including teachers, can explain to the children the connection between healthy habits, their mood, and how much better they can be at their favourite activity. Help them pick the best options; they may not be the perfect options but are the best in their situation. Praise them for choosing healthy, not for weight loss, or it can reinforce a negative attitude to food and eating disorders.
