In the face of warnings against the danger of adding sugar, syrups and cream to coffee, you may be surprised at wellness experts advocating the addition of butter. The inspiration comes from yak butter tea, a traditional Tibetan drink. The trick is to use unsalted grass-fed butter, or ghee, and coconut oil. Advocates who drink it for breakfast report improvements in energy, focus and satiety. High-quality grass-fed butter is seen as a super-food by some nutritionists due to its CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), shown to reduce belly fat, enhance weight loss, and boost heart health, while coconut oil is linked with fat-burning and enhanced brain health. Be warned, however, if you’re not eating a low-carb, Paleo-style diet to begin with, your body may store the fat instead of using it for energy.
Tibetan Tea
Ingredients
- 4 cups of water
- 2 heaped spoons of plain black tea
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons butter (unsalted)
- 1/3 cup milk
Method
- Bring four cups of water to a boil.
- Add tea.
- Add a quarter of a teaspoon of salt.
- Strain the tea.
- Add one third to a half cup of milk.
- Pour your tea mixture, along with two tablespoons of butter, into a blender.
- Blend the mixture for two or three minutes. Enjoy!
