You should consult your veterinarian before beginning a new exercise program for your dog, especially if they have any health conditions. The AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) Weight Management Guidelines for Dogs and Cats recommend that you start an exercise program, especially for an overweight and obese dog, safely. Begin with a five-minute walk two to three times a day. Gradually, increase the length and intensity of the walk until either your dog reaches their limit, which is when they should be happily tired, not exhausted, after a walk. The goal should be a total of 30–45 minutes of walking per day. Needless to say, if you are walking your dog every day, it helps you lose weight as well!
