Overweight and obesity in dogs leads to a shorter lifespan and a lower quality of life. A study, published in the ‘Journal of Animal Science’, shows that when overweight dogs were fed a reduced calorie, high-protein, high-fibre diet for 24 weeks, the dogs’ body composition and inflammatory markers changed over time like the positive changes seen in humans on similar diets. The pets reached a healthier weight without losing too much muscle mass, and their serum triglycerides, insulin and inflammatory markers all decreased with weight loss. A big Wooof to that!
