Feeding A Big-Breed Puppy

If you have a Great Dane or a Mastiff puppy, know that they have certain nutrient requirements, particularly in regard to calcium and fat. Large-breed growth diets have been formulated to be less energy-dense (less fat) and to contain reduced amounts of calcium and other nutrients as compared to regular growth diets. This is necessary because of the enormous differences in stomach volumes between large, small, and toy breeds. Regular and small-breed dogs have smaller stomachs, and so their food must be more energy-dense to meet their needs. Conversely, a big-breed puppy eating a small-breed puppy chow may consume too much energy and nutrients before feeling full, resulting in excessive energy (fat) and calcium intake.
