Researchers analysing the weight of over one million children have found that those living in areas with the most fast-food takeaways were more likely to be overweight or obese, especially those of secondary school age.
As the number of unhealthy food outlets in a neighbourhood increases, so does the number of overweight and obese children. The association is reversed in areas where more healthy food options are available. Children who are obese are more likely to become obese adults and this can lead to a range of health problems, including heart disease and diabetes.
